J Luc- Bio

I grew up in the West Kootenays and was inspired by the area’s natural beauty from an early age. As a child I collected and classified rocks, examined plants, and made aesthetic arrangements with spices. As a young adult, I spent a year in The Netherlands and was exposed to its fascinating garden plots, which mirrored its museums full of masterpieces. As an adult, natural materials are an important source of inspiration which I see as metaphors for creation and destruction. I am interested in our human efforts to classify, cultivate, and prune natural wildness with varying degrees of success.

I earned my BFA in Visual Arts from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2009. NSCAD lived up to its reputation and inspired me with its rich tradition of conceptual art. Working in an environment of intense critical discussion made me more aware of my work and its implications, while the intensity of my program increased my work ethic dramatically. During my studies, I experimented with a variety of painting media, video art, movement art, choreography, and drawing.

In recent years I have lived in Vancouver and the West Kootenays, where I have been painting, teaching, and trying my hand at creative directing.

I am currently living in Vancouver where I am working on a new body of work that I will use as part of my MFA application.

I’m always happy to discuss my work so don’t hesitate to contact me regarding questions or inquiries.
