In 2007, I had recently returned to Canada from Bergen Op Zoom, The Netherlands. While I was there, I spent a great deal of time visiting old buildings and historical sites, and many of the places I visited had very old cathedrals.

Walking in them, I could smell the petroleum scent of thousands of prayer candles lit throughout the centuries. I thought I could feel all the hope, fear, and faith of the people who had walked before me in these places.

These paintings are dedicated to those people I felt.
